I have been running the beta of capitan for some time, and office 2016. I quit using 2016 because it was crashing for me and i was losing a significant amount of work. 1 - word / excel / ppt would freeze 2 - wouldnt be able to get any program to work 3 - word / excel / ppt screen would turn into a whole black box, crash, and nothing would be saved after probably 10 or 11 times of losing work and having to re-do it i reverted back to the older version of office. Last week since 2016 came out for purchase i switched back. It has frozen one time and i lost work but nothing since then. Well it's not trash.
I work in proposals for a large oil and gas company and obviously we're stuck with Office. But part of my job is to be insane of the tiniest details of formatting (space between letters, lines, bullet points, headings, etc). It is a great set of programs and get a lot of hate just cause it's not free and it's the oldest. Also I really wouldn't recommend working across two office packages (eg like you mentioned using pages and Google sheets) that will just cause ball aches when chopping and changing.
Don't get me wrong pages is great and Google docs is decent. But my hands are tied by compatibility and as I consider myself something of a word processing power user, I can happily say Word let's you get real down and dirty with the tiniest details and works fantastically.
